In digital logic, a flip-flop or latch is a device with two stable states which can be used to store binary information. An ideal flip-flop has only two inputs, a clock (Clk) and a data input (D), and two outputs, a "Q" output and a complimentary output (Q\'), as shown below.The N74F109D,602 is a high speed dual D-type Flip-Flop with master reset. It has two D-type flip-flops with a common clock and reset. It is a one-of-a-kind chip that has been in production for many years and is well recognized for its superior performance and reliability.The N74F109D,602 has two data inputs – D1 and D2, two clock inputs – CLK1 and CLK2, two synchronization inputs – S1 and S2, two master reset inputs – MR1 and MR2, and two outputs – Q1 and Q2. The outputs are triggered off of the leading edge of the clock (Low to High transition), or on a low-going S input to achieve synchronization.The N74F109D,602 is capable of operating over a wide voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V and is designed to run at a maximum frequency of 40 MHz. It is also designed with a feature called “hot swap” which allows for quick replacement of an integrated circuit without having to halt power to the system. This makes it ideal for replacing older chips with newer chips without interrupting system operations.The N74F109D,602 is commonly used in applications such as Flip-Flop registers, data storage, addressable I/O ports, addressable data storage, delay circuits/line drivers, microwaves systems, logic gate conversion, and many more.To operate the N74F109D,602, the user must first set the power-on reset circuit and choose which flip-flop to use by using the Mode Select Input. The reset-state of the chip is determined by the level at the MR1 and MR2 inputs. When setting the chip in the reset mode, the clock, data, and synchronization inputs should be placed in their inactive states (low). To set the flip-flop in the active mode, the MR1 and MR2 inputs should be placed in their active states (high).The N74F109D,602 is triggered off of the rising edge of the clock, causing the data at the inputs (D1 and D2) to be latched into the flip-flops Q1 and Q2. The D1 and D2 inputs come into play when the clock is set in its inactive state, otherwise the data will pass straight to the outputs Q1 and Q2 and will not be latched.The synchronization inputs, S1 and S2, can be used to reduce clock multiplication timing errors.
