NCP1053ST44T3G is a member of the Chipcon high frequency offline switcher IC family which are designed to deliver cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions for application requiring low output power. With its integral 2A Rectification, topology, NCP1053ST44T3G can provide high power, high frequency performance with low component counts. This Offline Switcher IC family consists of an fixed frequency, current mode Control IC which integrates MOSFET driver, which leads to a minimized system bill–of-materials. This IC has the power capability to give efficient and high–voltage operation up to 75V.The main features of NCP1053ST44T3G are wide input voltage range (7V to 75V), low start–up and quiescent current, low frequency jitter and 2A integrated rectifier. Additionally, it provides various protections like Over–voltage protection, Over–temperature protection, Short–circuit protection from bad output loads and Thermal shutdown.The main application field for NCP1053ST44T3G is for SMPS applications that require low output power. Some of the applications include: LED drivers, power adapters, isolated chargers and isolated power supplies.Let us now look at the working principle of NCP1053ST44T3G IC. The IC works on the basis of a Pulsewidth Modulation (PWM) controller and a MOSFET driver. Depending on the external conditions, the control IC sets up a Pulse–width–modulated signal and routes it to the MOSFET driver. The MOSFET driver then converts the signal into a higher voltage that is applied to the output rectifier and filter. The output of this is then used to generate the desired DC output.The MOSFET driver consists of a high–voltage voltage Error Amplifier (VREF), a 2A high–side MOSFET driver, a 2A low–side MOSFET driver, a current sense amplifier and an oscillator. The Error Amplifier (VREF) provides a reference voltage that is used to set the output voltage. The other components used are to sense the current and control the turn–on and turn–off of the MOSFET’s.The current sense amplifier senses the current from primary and secondary side that is flowing through the rectifier and filter. The current sense amplifier then feeds the current information to the PWM comparator. PWM comparator analyze the current from both primary and secondary side, and based on the information it sets up a Pulse–width–modulated signal for the MOSFET driver.Based on the Pulse–width–modulated signal, MOSFET driver turns ON or OFF the MOSFETS to regulate the current flow through the Rectifier and filter so that the desired output voltage is obtained.Finally, the output of the rectifier and filter is used to generate the desired DC output voltage which is fed to the output load. In conclusion, NCP1053ST44T3G works with a PWM controller and a MOSFET driver to regulate the current flow through the rectifier and filter which in turn generate the desired DC output voltage. The main application field of NCP1053ST44T3G is for SMPS applications that require low output power such as LED drivers, power adapters, isolated chargers and isolated power supplies.
