The NCP1399AADR2G (NCP1399) from On Semiconductor is a low power offline regulator with integrated high and low side power MOSFETs, optimized for low standby power flyback and quasi-resonant applications. It is a cost-effective solution for AC/DC adapter, charger and offline LED Driver converter applications with universal input, optimized to meet the need of small size and high efficiency for consumer portable applications.

Application Field:

NCP1399 is suitable for a wide range of offline applications, including AC/DC adapters, chargers and LED driver converters for consumer and portable electronic applications. It includes a high-side and low-side MOSFET, oscillator, programmable protection, integrated StartO voltage control and an auto-fan control with PWM+PID control. The low standby power consumption (<0.35W) makes the NCP1399 ideal for designs which require a compact, safe and cost effective solution in terms of size, efficiency and cost.

Working Principle:

NCP1399 employs the quasi-resonant switching to reduce switching losses, which typically arise in converters operating directly from AC supply. The quasi-resonant converters are designed to work under two switching modes, the burst mode (or discontinuous conduction mode) and the valley mode (or discontinuous conduction mode).

In the Burst mode or DCM, the inductor current is discontinuous. The most significant switching losses have to be taken into account, particularly if the converter is required to have a low standby power consumption. During the DCM, the power dissipated in the MOSFETs, can be reduced by decreasing the overall on-time. In this mode, the output voltage is sensed on the high-side MOSFET and is used to adjust the on-time of the transistor prior to its turn-off point in order to achieve the desired output.

In the Valley mode or CCM, the inductor current is continuous. The switching losses can be neglected and the power dissipation of the MOSFETs is low. In this mode, the oscillator frequency is adjusted to reach a higher output voltage and/or a longer on-time. The output ripple is minimized in the CCM mode due to the small ripple current.

The NCP1399 is designed to automatically switch the converter between DCM and CCM mode. The Burst mode limits the maximum output current while limiting the output voltage, while the Valley mode limits the maximum peak of chrominance current while limiting the turn-on and turn-off times at a fixed frequency. This offers great flexibility in the design of power supplies.
