The NCP1060FLBKGEVB is an evaluation board which can be used for DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS applications. It is designed for low cost switching, regulated power supplies, flyback converters, and other flyback downstream secondary OFF-LINE converters, offering wide input and output voltages operation, along with high power density.
Operating at a frequency range of 50kHz to 500kHz, the NCP1060FLBKGEVB features programmable output voltage; adjustable duty cycle over the full load conditions, and no-load detection and protection. It is also provided with a peak-current-mode control, allowing current clipping at a selected value. Without the use of an optocoupler, the board can control average, peak and valley currents.
The board consists of two separate circuits, the primary stage including the PFM controller, insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), and flyback transformer; and the secondary stage, a low cost low power PWM controller with Low Voltage (LV) and high voltage (HV) dual output with adjustable voltage, overload short-circuit current protection, and secondary-side loop control.
The control and protection are divided in two parts: the primary and the secondary. In the primary part, the PFM controller provides protection against overcurrent, short-circuit, and overvoltage protections. In addition, its adjustable duty cycle enables low cost operation and adaptation to different configurations. In the secondary part, the OFF-LINE PWM controller will also provide high voltage control, detection of no-load condition, peak-current-mode control, and overload/short circuit/input voltage protection.
The working principle behind the NCP1060FLBKGEVB is based on the use of two distinct control signals. The first one is the primary control signal, which is generated by the PFM controller in order to regulate the output voltage and current in the primary circuit. This signal is fed to the IGBT gate, controlling the primary power switch and the primary current. The second control signal is generated by the OFF-LINE PWM controller, and it is fed to the gate of the secondary power switch, controlling the output voltage of the secondary circuit, as well as the protection features. In this way, the NCP1060FLBKGEVB can provide maximum power efficiency in a wide range of voltage applications.
