The NCP1203P40G is an integrated circuit developed by ON Semiconductor that delivers a high-performance, low-cost, low power solution for offline switcher applications requiring a high degree of accuracy and regulation. It contains a low-voltage, single-stage flyback Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). The device integrates all of the necessary features for the control of off-line mains power supplies, ranging from 6W up to 25W of output power. It is designed for PFC Preliminary Small Appliances (PSA) as well as PFC Topologies suitable for personal computers (PCs) and peripherals.

The NCP1203P40G provides a complete integrated solution with a peak efficiency of up to 96% at a low external component count. The device contains a built-in Gate Driver, High Voltage Power Supply, Fast Transient Response Regulator and current limit protection. It integrates several external components such as an Optical Coupler, Bootstrap Diode and a High Voltage MOSFET to reduce board space, lower cost and improve total solution efficiency.

The NCP1203P40G has numerous features that helps reduce power losses and protect the device from various fault conditions. These features include a programmable overload protection, a programmable current limit, an over temperature protection, an integrated soft start and feedback regulation. The integrated soft start prevents over current conditions during start up and helps ensure a fast and reliable turn-on, while the feedback regulation ensures a constant output voltage during load transients.

The working principle of the NCP1203P40G is based on an off-line flyback topology. An external High Voltage MOSFET is driven by the integrated gate driver, which steps-up the incoming AC voltage to a much higher DC voltage. This DC voltage is then switched on and off at a fixed frequency, which is determined by the external oscillator. This switching frequency is typically set to 50KHz, however, it can be internally set within a range of 10KHz to 100KHz. The current flowing in the secondary windings is then monitored and regulated through the integrated feedback loop and current limit protection.

The NCP1203P40G is ideal for offline switcher applications such as AC-DC adapters and power supplies, standby power supplies and battery chargers. The device is designed to comply with the requirements of worldwide energy efficiency standards such as the European Code of Conduct 5 (C5) and the Environmental Protection Agency Energystar 6.0 program. As such, the NCP1203P40G is suited for use in personal computers, set-top boxes, DVRs, LCD and LED monitors, gaming consoles, audio/vide players and other medium-power, offline switching applications.
