The NCP1230P100G is a high performance Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller with an integrated precision reference. It is designed for Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) operating from an offline source such as an AC line or a battery. It can be used with a flyback topology, or other topology-configurable configurations such as forward, half-bridge, or full-bridge.
The NCP1230P100G operates with a fixed oscillator frequency of 275kHz and is designed to handle a wide range of power supplies. It features adaptive on-time control and offers comprehensive protection including under-voltage lockout (UVLO), frequency jittering, cycle-by-cycle current limiting, output over-voltage protection, and over temperature protection.
The NCP1230P100G requires only a few external components and its output is easily adjustable using an external potentiometer. The device is available in an industry-standard, 8-pin SOIC package.
Working Principle
The NCP1230P100G is a PWM current-mode controller for low-power SMPS applications with wide input voltage range. The IC implements a hysteretic current-mode control loop with an internal reference. The principle of the hysteretic control is the comparison of the actual inductor current in a power supply with respect to an internal current-sense reference.
When theis reference is exceeded, the output of the comparator is at a high level and the controller remains in off-mode and does not switch the power stage. But if the current drops below the reference, the comparator output transitions to a low level, initiating a switching pulse. By controlling the amount of current in the power supply in this way, the NCP1230P100G is able to maintain the stability of the system.
The NCP1230P100G features adaptive on-time control in order to optimize the efficiency and reduce system losses. It features a programmable on-time function that adjusts the switching frequency to reduce switching losses as well as current peaks at lower line/load conditions.
The NCP1230P100G also features several safety protections for over temperature, cycle-by-cycle current limit and over-voltage protection. The device can also be programmed for frequency and burst switching modenodes.
Applications
The NCP1230P100G is ideal for a wide range of SMPS applications including switched-mode power supplies for consumer, industrial, and telecom applications. It is suitable for offline DC/DC converters, adapters, and chargers. It can also be used in high-efficiency energy-saving applications such as LED lighting, POE (Power over Ethernet), and consumer electronics.
