The NCP1351APG is a member of the ON Semiconductor NCP1350 and NCP1351 family of advanced Pre-Scaled, Low-Voltage, PWM Controllers specifically designed for Off-Line Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS). This PWM controller is especially optimized to achieve superior performance in universal-input, off-line flown forward converters. The advanced power supply design controller features leader-follower, pre-scaled oscillator, precise reference, and wide VCC range allowing designers to minimize AC/DC converters time-to-market.

The NCP1351APG\'s application field include off-line fly-back, forward converter and other topologies like dual converters, multi-output converters, bridge converters or non-isolated Point-Of-Load (POL) converters. It is ideal for applications with 110 to 230 VAC operation and is designed for very low power applications such as cellular phone chargers, notebook adapters, external power supplies and many other. Other applications that make use of the NCP1351APG include lighting ballasts and telecom bias supplies.

The NCP1351APG includes a high-performance Voltage Mode PWM controller with a precision ±3% reference, Undervoltage Lockout (UVLO) and programmable soft-start. The PWM features an active-low enable control, a pre-scaled oscillator, a leader/follower architecture and an active-low reset.

The NCP1351APG operates at frequency up to 200 kHz with a temperature range between –40 to 125°C. Its wide supply voltage range of 9 to 600V makes it a very flexible solution when dealing with multiple input topologies and output voltages. It is available in 8-pin or 10-pin PDIP, SOIC, DFN and Power DFN packages.

Regarding its working principle, the NCP1351APG is designed with a leader/follower architecture that allows some separation of the primary and secondary stages. The leader stage is seeded by the pre-scaled oscillator and the output voltage is determined by the feedback regulation loop by comparing the error amplifier output voltage to the internal reference. The leader\'s output modulates the power MOSFETs, in the primary side of the power transformer, to compensate for load changes. The output of the leader is then transferred to the slave FET driver with a high speed propagation delay to produce the exact charging time required by the secondary stage.

The remainder of the NCP1351APG\'s circuitry provides the necessary safety circuits, current limiting and other functions.The undervoltage lockout provide a means of protecting the system from malfunction in the event the input voltage is below a predetermined level. The overcurrent protection circuitry detects the peak current available across the external sensing resistor via a peak current comparator sampling network.

The NCP1351APG provides energy dimensioning and EMI-noise generation reduction that limits the primary switch voltage and resulting transformer core stress. It also provides an output connect undervoltage detection which detects the output voltage of secondary side, then skips the switching cycles when the Vcc is nearby shutdown. That ensures the starting performance and energy savings under low output loading situation.

In conclusion, the NCP1351APG is an advanced PWM controller with pre-scaled oscillator, leader/follower architecture, active-low enable control and programmable soft-start. It offers a high performance solution for universal-input, off-line flown forward converters and is designed for very low power applications with a wide supply voltage range of 9 to 600V.
