Power Management IC (PMIC) products must be designed to drive modern applications which are highly integrated and require higher performance, lower cost, and superior system-level reliability. The evolution of smart phone technology, for example, has driven the requirement for integrated power management solutions like the NCP1351BDR2G AC/DC Converter from ON Semiconductor. This integrated circuit is a cost effective, low profile, offline switcher that integrates primary side power factor correction(PFC) and current mode control, providing users with high power harmonic distortion performance, improved thermal performance, and higher conversion efficiencies. The NCP1351BDR2G device is targeted at AC/DC power supplies with power ratings of up to 20W, allowing the developer to more easily design solutions with low weight, low total solution cost, and smaller foot print.
The NCP1351BDR2G device integrates the NCP1351 Boost PFC and NCP1395 currentmode controller with special pin configurations and logic level signal interface. It provides both forward and flyback topologies in a single AC/DC solution, eliminating the need for a dedicated rectifier. It offers very high efficiency, even at light loads, and can provide up to 20 Watts of power, making it ideal for a variety of portable applications.
The NCP1351BDR2G is designed to provide excellent power factor performance at a very low total cost. The integrated Boost PFC offers an input ripple current of less than 5% at 115VAC, while the integrated current-mode controller delivers a peak efficiency of up to 96.2%. The device has a low profile, allowing it to be integrated into slimmer application designs, and its high reliability also makes it well suited for continuous operation and extended battery life.
Operationally, the NCP1351BDR2G combines a high gain error amplifier with voltage feedback, an internal slope compensation, a UVLO, and a PWM controller with an integrated Bandgap voltage reference. The output voltage is maintained over a wide input range with the external resistors setting the regulation loop. The error amplifier introduces a current compensation (or slope compensation) to ensure stability over a wide range of operating frequencies, load conditions, and line and temperature variations. The high gain of the error amplifier also helps to reduce the required external compensation components and assures excellent load regulation.
In addition, the NCP1351BDR2G includes a current limitation circuit with both peak current level and blanking time programming provisions. The blanking time allows the current limit to be adjusted to the expected charging current frequency, making it more suitable for battery charging applications. It also includes a start-up circuit capable of starting up at nominal line with no external components required, as well as a soft start/hiccup protection circuit to prevent in-rush current noise.
For protection, the NCP1351BDR2G includes short-circuit, over-temperature and line under-voltage protection. It also has an adjustable over-voltage protection (OVP) circuit that can be enabled or disabled, as well as an adjustable over-current protection (OCP) circuit to protect the power transistor from over-loading conditions. Finally, the NCP1351BDR2G includes a programmable power-good configuration which can be used to indicate when the power supply is in regulation or out of regulation. This feature is especially useful for systems that require power on reset circuits.
The NCP1351BDR2G is ideally suited for a variety of off-line power supply design applications, including adapters, chargers, lighting, UPS systems, and low-voltage industrial loads.
