The NCP1380BGEVB evaluation board is designed for evaluating the performance of NCP1380 phase-leg power factor correction controllers and features an on-board Fly-Back based Offline power supply circuit providing both DC/DC and AC/DC currents. The NCP1380 operates from an input voltage of up to 30V and provides up to 3W of power without any additional heatsink required. The NCP1380 can operate in both continuous and discontinuous mode, which results in improved efficiency.

The NCP1380BGEVB features a universal input voltage ranging from 80V AC to 264V AC, with current-mode PFC control with average current, resulting in improved light load performance. It also has integrated circuits for soft start, brown-in/out detection, over voltage protection, over temperature protection and overload protection. The NCP1380BGEVB also features a 3-phase PFC power supply, which reduces the input current distortion, making it ideal for the application requiring high power factor but limited input current and voltage.

The operation of the NCP1380BGEVB works by first regulating the power factor by controlling the output voltage swing so that the switched current waveform on the AC line is nearly sinusoidal and of zero net magnetizing current. This is done through the on-board high-side MOSFET in Figure 1. The output voltage is then regulated by a fixed frequency, current mode PFC control circuit and a low side MOSFET shown in Figure 2.

The PFC control circuit uses a peak current sensing technique to sense the inductor current and regulates the peak inductor current by controlling the duty cycle of the switching action of the MOSFET. This allows the system to maintain the peak output voltage as close as possible to a set value. The voltage regulation is also improved by the integrated brownout/overvoltage protection circuit.
