.NCP1607BDR2G Application Field and Working Principle
The NCP1607BDR2G is a Power Factor Correction (PFC) controller designed to operate as a boost converter. This power factor controller adapts a PFC stage to the AC line input, allowing for high efficiency, low harmonic distortion and a wide input range of 90V – 265V ac. This controller allows for a high performance power factor, low total harmonic distortion and low total harmonic current.
The NCP1607BDR2G was created with a unique dual-mode control that balances the PFC stage efficiency and input power factor. This controller enables the scalability of different power levels, a short circuit protection, and a line-synchronized burst mode for reduced power consumption during light or no-load operating conditions.

Working Principle

The controller also adjusts the current to ensure a near perfect power factor, while minimizing harmonic distortion.
During normal operation, the NCP1607BDR2G works as a three-stage boost controller. The first stage is the pre-regulation (or “power factor correction”) stage, in which the input voltage is monitored and the current is regulated to a specified level. The second stage is the voltage regulation (or “dynamic voltage”) stage, in which the controller adjusts the output voltage to match the input voltage. The third stage is the current-limiting stage, in which the controller limits the output current to the maximum specified level.
In the case of a short circuit or overcurrent, the NCP1607BDR2G is able to detect and limit the current immediately, protecting the load and other components connected to it. In cases of light or no-load operation, the NCP1607BDR2G will enter the synchronized-burst mode to reduce power consumption, while still maintaining the output voltage.
