NCP729FC25T2G is an adjustable linear voltage regulator from ON Semiconductor\'s NCP range. It is a positive voltage regulator, capable of delivering up to 2.5A current. It operates at Input voltage range of 4.5V – 25V and adjustable Output voltage range of 1.25V – 13V. Besides, it features thermal shutdown, overcurrent protection, and current limiting.

Application Field

Linear voltage regulator is a very efficient device in terms of voltage regulation accuracy, cost and space. Because of these reasons it finds its applications in various fields. NCP729FC25T2G is widely used in automotive, industrial, medical and computing applications. It can be used in battery-powered applications where its quiescent current of only 8μA can provide longer battery life. It also finds its applications in telecom, networking, and consumer electronics for providing low ripple noise and stable outputs. Along with these applications, NCP729FC25T2G is also used in off-line AC/internal DC voltage regulators, step-down power supply, DC/DC conversion, local on-card regulation, post regulation, and any other application needing an inexpensive, adjustable, high-power linear regulator.

Working Principle

The working principle of NCP729FC25T2G is based on the homopolar transistor circuit, which provides very accurate voltage control. When the voltage at the control pin (IN1) is higher than that of the output pin (OUT), a current flows through the homopolar transistor from the control pin to output pin, providing regulation of the output voltage. The voltage on the ADJ pin sets the output voltage by a resistive voltage divider from the output voltage to ground. The regulated output voltage (Vout) is equal to ADJ x Vout/RADJ. The current limiting is done by monitoring the voltage drop across a current sense resistor (RSENSE) connected in series with the output of the regulator.

The NCP729FC25T2G also utilizes the thermal shutdown feature. It shuts down the device when its junction temperature is higher than 160 degrees Celsius to prevent damage to the regulator due to high temperature. Moreover, it provides overcurrent protection to the device. Normally, current sense resistor is used to detect the maximum current that can be tolerated by the regulator and hence, it protects the device from overcurrent. The quiescent current of this regulator is as low as 8μA, which makes it ideal for battery-powered applications.

NCP729FC25T2G is suitable for a wide range of applications needing an adjustable, high-power linear voltage regulator. Its features such as low quiescent current and thermal shutdown give it an edge in many applications. It is an invaluable addition to the power supply design engineer\'s toolkit.
