The NCP78LC30NTRG refers to a family of low power, medium voltage, fixed output, three-terminal voltage regulators. These three-terminal regulators, provide an external output reference that is used to set a 2.5V±2%, 5.0V±2%, 10.0V±2%, 15.0V±2%, 18.0V±2%, or adjustable output voltage, over an input voltage range of 6 to 35V, with currents up to 1A.
The NCP78LC30NTRG is highly efficient and cost-effective for extended temperature range (55°C to +125°C), battery-powered systems, and for hot-swap applications where low quiescent current consumption is required. While featuring very low dropout voltage, the NCP78LC30NTRG provides robust protection against input voltage transients due to its current limit, power shutdown over-temperature protection and over-current protection. Furthermore, its excellent line and load regulation improves the performance of the systems through a reduction of power spikes, while its thermal shut-down protection with hysteresis ensures a greater system temperature stability and maximizes the quality of the output voltage.

The NCP78LC30NTRG has many applications in consumer, automotive and industrial areas where low dropout voltage, low quiescent current, high current and robustness against input voltage transients are required. These devices can be utilized in many different medium voltage output circuits, such as battery powered systems, line powered appliances and hot-swap outputs. Examples applications include, but are not limited to, DC-DC converters, single-supply circuits, active ORing applications, low-dropout linear regulators, buck converters, bias supplies, OR-ing controller circuits, lightening protection and many others.
Working Principle
The NCP78LC30NTRG is a three-terminal voltage regulator device with a ground (GND), an output voltage terminal (VOUT) and an adjustable input voltage terminal (VIN).The output voltage is fixed internally and is determined by the resistor divider connected between the output and the adjustment terminal, as illustrated in the schematic.
The voltage regulator operates in the current limit mode and contains a series pass element, limiting the output current to a maximum value, depending on the version and on the type of external components.The output voltage of the device is maintained at the desired level over time, by comparing the actual output voltage with an internally generated reference.When the output voltage approaches the reference, the series pass element is placed in saturation mode, limiting the output current and maintaining the output voltage constant.
The NCP78LC30NTRG is designed to operate with a minimum voltage drop across it, so that the output voltage is stabilized quickly and accurately, while the dropout voltage, depending on the output current level, is typically between 350mV and 700mV.The device is equipped with a thermal shut-down feature, based on an internal current mirror circuit that monitors, with a small temperature coefficient, a sense pin junction temperature and shuts down the current regulator when the junction temperature exceeds a certain critical value.
