NCP81038MNTWG Application Field and Working Principle

NCP81038MNTWG is a low power 8-channel analog- and PWM-controlled Low-Dropout (LDO) and Buck converter Regulator. Designed for reliable operation over the wide extended temperature range, this device is ideal for applications such as the charging of super-capacitors, Backlight LED and battery supply for a wide range of applications, including smartphones and tablet PCs.

Working Principle

NCP81038MNTWG operates by switching the current in an inductor, then lowering the voltage through a Low Drop-Out or LDO regulator. When the output current is steady, the inductor current will be limited by the output current and will draw current from the supply as an average of the input voltage and the output voltage. The inductor current will cause the output voltage to drop, resulting in an increase in the output current, and the cycle will continue.

The buck converter in this device also works in the same way, but by controlling the switching frequency and the duty cycle.
