Working Principle

The NCV8851-1DBR2G is a synchronous, step-down DC-DC converter with high-side and low-side NMOS switches. It uses a fixed frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme with a unique current mode control to supply up to 0.9A continuous load from a 3V input. Two external resistors are used to set the output voltage by changing the duty cycle. A power good indicator is also included for fault protection.

The NCV8851’s linear + switching topology combines the best of both worlds to achieve efficiency greater than 90% under light to moderate load conditions. At light loads, both MOSFETs are off, and the output voltage is regulated via a low on-resistance linear regulator. At heavier loads, both MOSFETs are on and the converter operates in pulse width modulation (PWM) mode. This step up in switching frequency allows for higher efficiency without increasing output voltage ripple or output voltage variation.

The low quiescent current of the NCV8851 makes it ideal for battery-powered applications. It has a shutdown pin that can be used to control the current draw of the converter. When the shutdown pin is pulled low, the converter shuts down and the current draw decreases to less than 10uA.

NCV8851-1DBR2G also provides over battery voltage (OBV), temperature protection, and over current protection (OCP) to ensure the safety of the system. Its slew rate control feature allows the output voltage to be ramped up or down over a configurable time limit to eliminate inrush current and reduce heat created during system start-up.
