The NCV8871BSTGEVB device is an evaluation unit, built as part of the DC/DC or AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS product family. It is a compact device, which provides an easy-to-use platform for evaluating the performance of the NCV8871, an integrated system controller IC from ON Semiconductor. It combines the proven performance of the NCV8871 with the best-in-class power management technology from ON Semiconductor to provide an efficient, cost-effective and reliable evaluation solution.

The NCV8871BSTGEVB is ideal for DC/DC and AC/DC applications, such as AC adaptors and notebook chargers. It is also suitable for other applications including automotive, LED lighting and consumer electronics. The device supports a variety of topologies, such as the tried-and-true Flyback technique, the isolated Flyback technique, a wide range Input-Output (I/O) Buck technique, and an all-digital Quasi-Resonant Economy (QRE) techniques.

The device incorporates two independently operating, independent current-mode PWM controllers in a single monolithic IC. These two separately controlled outputs, with individually adjustable peak current limits, provide an optimized control scheme for both low power applications, such as small motor drives or broadcast power supplies, and higher power applications, such as LED drivers and multi-output computer power supplies.

The NCV8871BSTGEVB is powered by an external main power die. It requires no external potentiometers or programming device. Its main features include an on-chip clock oscillator, an internal temperature sensor, and on-chip linear regulator. Additionally, the device offers a comprehensive set of protection features. These include over-voltage protection (OVP), over-temperature protection (OTP) ,DC fault protection, and an adjustable soft-start-to-shutdown timer.

In operation, the NCV8871BSTGEVB detects the input voltage through an internal bandgap reference. It then uses an internal reference voltage to set the peak current for each output.
