The NCV890203MWGEVB evaluation board was designed to aid engineers in assessing the performance of a higher power wide voltage range integrated power stage – the NCV890203MWG. The board was also designed to be used without complex and expensive setup and test equipment.
The board is classified under evaluation boards used for DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) switches mode power supplies (SMPS). It was designed by ON Semiconductor to help facilitate the implementation and testing of their power ICs including the NCV890203 MOSFET drivers. The evaluation board provides reference design to the test engineer for use as a point of reference for testing the evaluation time. The board is capable of providing a maximum of 3.3 A output current.
The working principle of the NCV890203MWGEVB is based on the buck topology. This topology is an efficient power conversion system that has the following advantages: It provides correct voltage regulation, offers high efficiency, larger output power rating, and wide input voltage range. The key elements of the board are the ON Semiconductor NCV890203 dual MOSFET driver and the NCV7272 PWM controller.
The NCV890203 is a high-voltage, wide operating voltage dual MOSFET driver. It has built-in flexiHV high voltage regulation system that can operate within a range of 8~36 V. The driver is optimized for driving larger external power MOSFETs with minimum turn-on and turn-off times. It also features high current capability, wide reverse voltage protection, and high input voltage adaptation.
The NCV7272 buck controller includes an internal oscillator that is capable of providing over a range of frequencies from 100 kHz to 1 MHz. The low power operation is enabled with the use of a power-save feature that is enabled when the input voltage is less than 10V. It also has a wakeup feature which ensures the fast turn-on of the PWM controller using the feedback signal. The digital soft-start helps in limiting the input current during startup.
The board has an onboard external resistor for external frequency set up. If the set frequency is lower, the NCV7272 controller will reduce its switching frequency and increase its efficiency. Further, the board includes an output filter which suppresses switching noise. The filter is designed to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) and other types of electromagnetic interference (EMI).
The board includes two LED indicators, one for the Enable signal and the other as a power-on LED indicator. The board also has two test points for measuring voltage of the current-sensing MOSFET. The board comes with a jumper for external frequency setting and two sets of jumpers for the output current setting.
The NCV890203MWGEVB evaluation board allows the engineer to assess the power IC\'s performance from a cost effective point of view; which is has been designed to operate in a wide voltage range and with low power consumption. Power reports can be created to report on the power consumption, the voltage stability and the overall performance of the MOSFET drivers. The evaluation board helps in providing test results that represent the IC performance in a better way and offers an overall picture on the capabilities of the IC.
