Working Principle

NN30421A-VB is a switching regulator based on a fixed frequency Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) architecture. This regulator is able to provide a very low output noise, by using Adaptive Pulse Control (APC). The APC automatically adjusts the PWM pulse width in order to maintain a constant switching frequency while adjusting the duty cycle to maintain a constant output voltage. The output voltage of the NN30421A-VB is controlled by an internal N-channel MOSFET. The current through the MOSFET is controlled by the Output Voltage Sense (OVS) input, which is in the range of 0.225V to 0.4V. The PWM duty cycle is bounded from 0% to 100% thus a resulting output voltage can range from 0.9V to 4.8V. The NN30421A-VB also features an internal Over-Current Protection (OCP). This is achieved by sensing the voltage drop across a current sensing resistor connected to the Power Good (PG) pin. The OCP is implemented inside the PWM loop. Thus, when the current through the MOSFET is excessive, the OCP immediately shuts down the device and the output voltage drops to zero. The OCP circuit also includes a thermal shutdown circuit to protect the IC against excessive temperature. The device is also equipped with a Soft Start (SS). This ensures a smooth start-up of the output voltage. Once the device is activated, the output voltage ramps-up slowly to its final value, thus avoiding inrush currents. The soft start time can be adjusted to the optimized value with an external capacitor. Conclusion
