The PL pin controls the loading of data from parallel input buffers (serially) and the SD pin is used for the serial input of data that needs to be shifted in serially.The device works in the following way. Data is loaded into the parallel input buffers either by setting the PL pin to logic 1 or the SD pin to logic 0 and providing the necessary 8-bits of serial data. When the PL pin is set to logic 1, data is loaded into the parallel input buffers regardless of the SCLK value. When the PL pin is set to logic 0, the data will be sent serially (in order) from the SD pin each time the SCLK pin switches from logic 0 to logic 1. As this happens, the data is shifted one bit at a time to the right, thus allowing the 8-stage serial-in/parallel-out shift register to perform its desired task.In the device, parallel data is loaded into the output buffers (SO1 – SO8) after it has been shifted from serial input. However, due to the internal 8 stages, no data can be loaded into the last shift register stage (this is known as the “1” bit carry indicator) until the SCLK has been toggled 8 times in total (SCLK pin will always be set to 0 after every 8 toggles). All data in the output buffers (SO1 – SO8) will stay intact as long as there is no change in the serial data and the SCLK is not toggled.Overall, shift registers are essential tools in any low power, high speed system that requires efficient data transmission and the NPIC6C4894PWJ is the perfect logic device for such applications.
