The NS16C2752TVSX/NOPB, or simply NS16, is a highly versatile interface device used in embedded systems mainly to power communication between components. It is typical constructed as an universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART), allowing two devices to exchange data in a single end-to-end link format. The NS16, being available with different versions of the wired interfaces, is fully compatible to serial-based communication between host and embedded systems. It provides a fast, reliable and economical means of establishing message forwarding and selective routing in control networks.

The application field for NS16 extends from static monitoring, device control to intelligent interfacing, to name just a few. As an UART device, it is suitable for all serial communication protocols including RS-232, RS-485 and SPI, making it popular for systems that require minimal effort for setup, maintain and repair. The working principle of the NS16 revolves around its main components: the receive channel, transmit channel and the control channel (RX, TX, C). Firstly, the C channel in the NS16 charges its internal registers and the enclosed data buffer. It then sets up the direction of the two-way link by sending the data request signals to the other side. Afterwards, reception and transmission of data is enabled sequentially.

To send data, the RX channel first encodes the message frame information by assigning a start-bit and a stop-bit. Once complete, the data is clocked out of the NS16 and received on the other end. Simultaneously, the TX channel receives a bit-sequence from the other side, effectively decoding it by removing the start-bit and stop-bit from the message frame. The NS16 then triggers an interrupt request line to its microprocessor, alerting the control programs of incoming data.

For improved quality and speed of communication, various parameters of the NS16 can be configured according to the demand of the application. This includes frame length, bit size, parity, stop bit length and the baud rate which can generally be an adjustable between 1200bps and 50bps, making it suitable for both slow-speed and intermittent communication.

In addition to its versatile UART capability, the NS16 also provides a broad set of other features, such as auto-watchdog timer to reset the system in case of sudden malfunction, Intelligent Buffer Management that handles underruns/overruns and data loss, and a set of Multi-Protocol Support for reviving 9-bit and 16-bit data frames. These features ensure reliable commnication between devices over any of the wired interfaces.

By exploiting the numerous features the NS16 provides, it has the potential to become one of the widely used interface device in embedded systems. Its accurate, reliable and cost-efficient interface makes it very attractive for applications ranging from communications to control systems in a broad range of settings.
