Thyristors – SCRs (silicon-controlled rectifiers) are two-terminal, semiconductor, electrical switches which can be used to control electric current in a variety of applications. They are specified by the voltage and current ratings and can be used to regulate DC voltages in a wide range of power supplies, electronic chassis, and adjustable power control systems.A thyristor can be likened to a "solid state relay", since it behaves similarly to a relay in that it can switch on and off current when triggered by an input. However, unlike a relay, the thyristor is capable of switching current over a wide range of voltages and currents with extremely low losses and almost instantaneous response time. Furthermore, thyristors are ideal for high-frequency switching in integrated circuits because of their small size, low cost, and simple operation.
