OPB660N Application Field and Working Principle
The OPB660N is an optical sensor device known as a "Photointerrupter". It belongs from a larger family of products known as "Slot Type" Optical Sensors, which are characterized by a two-piece construction with an LED emitter and a photosensitive / photodetector. The photointerrupter or the OPB660N, however, uses a transistor output as its sensing mechanism instead of a mechanical switch.
The OPB660N has been designed for the detection and monitoring of multiple objects. It works by utilizing infrared light to detect an object, breaking the beam, and hence, triggering an electrical output. Internal circuitry also optimizes the signal emitted by the LED emitter, allowing it to detect objects in close and far work areas. As such, the OPB660N is an ideal device for use in any application where object and material presence, or absence needs to be known.
In terms of assembly, the OPB660N consists of two parts, namely the LED emitter and the photosensitive component. An onboard drive circuit is then fitted on the device for controlling the drive current. During operation, an infrared light beam is transmitted from the LED emitter, passes through the slot area on the OPB660N, and reaches the photosensitive component. If an object passes through the slot, the light beam is partially interrupted, and the photosensitive component detects this, leading to a signal output from the OPB660N. A massive variety of objects can be detected with the OPB660N, ranging in size from a few centimeters to several feet.
The set-up also allows for accurate gain adjustment, eliminating the need for external components. And the onboard circuitry also enables noise-immunity in the few nanoseconds range. The fast response time, exceedingly long busbar life, as well as its relatively low power consumption further expand its capabilities as an optical sensor. About a few pulses of the signal output can be detected even in the presence of electrical noise. This helps to provide reliable detection over long periods of time, making the OPB660N a reliable sensor for many applications.
