The OPB826S Series photoreflective slot type photointerrupters are a family of optoelectronic components designed based on the transistor output principle. These devices are used for sensing when a target object passes between them and the optical transmitter. The infrared emitting diode (IRED) and photo detector are held in a small, sealed package and arranged to optimize light transfer across the sensing slot. The OPB826S Series have higher power output and a large slot area making them ideal for lower duct air and object sensing applications.

The transistor output external photointerrupter is capable of detecting opaque objects and has two distinct states, allowing it to sense finite dimensional targets. This type of photointerrupter operates by emitting pulses of light from an illuminator, called an IRED, which passes through the slot lands of the photointerrupter package and is reflected or scattered by the passing object. When a sufficient quantity of light is reflected or scattered, the transistor output changes from logic level “0” to logic level “1”. The power output of the OPB826S device is adjustable within the factory over a relatively wide range.

The OPB826S Series photointerrupters are designed to operate in an ambient temperature range of -10 to +50°C. Technical specifications for this type of photointerrupter include the following dimensions: 6.35 × 4.45mm; operating voltage range of 3 to 12 VDC; and power dissipation of 5 W (max). The basic features of the OPB826S include an on-off function, wide dynamic range, high sensitivity, minimal drift, a fast response time, and low power consumption. The OPB826S is ideal for applications such as motion control, reflection sensing, and density/weight sensing.

Typical applications of the OPB826S Series photointerrupters include air flow/ventilation sensing, motion control, and reflective sensing. In applications such as air flow sensing and ventilation, the device is arranged such that the IRED is placed at one end of a length of metallic tubing. When air flows in one direction, the emitted light is scattered off the walls of the tube, and the photo detector senses the scattered light. A transistor output is provided, and the signal is read out by an external control system. This application illustrates the reflection sensing principle of photointerrupters.

In motion control applications, the OPB826S can also be used. This type of application requires two OPB826S devices arranged in an opposite manner to detect the presence of finite objects passing between the two devices. When an object passes between them, the emitted light is scattered off the passing object and the photo detector on the other side of the object senses the scattered light. This allows for precise object detection and motion control.

The OPB826S Series photointerrupters are ideal for applications requiring small dimensions, wide light intensity range, and high speed signal transmission. With its high power output, large slot area, and fast response time, the OPB826S is ideal for both air flow/ventilation sensing and motion control applications.
