The OPB973L51 is a 4-element Slot-Type Photointerrupter composed of an Emitting Diode, a Receive Diode and two Light-shielding/Blocking Slots placed in the receiving diodes path. It is a logic output type optical sensor which uses a shoulder type package. The shoulder type package ensures good sensitivity and requires less space for deployment. The operating voltage of the OPB973L51 is 5V and its switching frequency is up to 1MHz. It has a low operating current of 0.2mA max and a low dark current of 0.1mA max.

The working principle of the OPB973L51 relies on the Emitting Diode emitting light and the blocking slots in the optical path. When no object is present, the Photointerrupter does not detect any reflectance and the emitted light passes from between the two slots. When there is an object in the optical path, the emitted light reflects off the object and is detected by the Receive Diode creating a logic output from the Photointerrupter. The logic output can be used to identify the presence or absence of objects from the optical path.
