TVSs, or Transient Voltage Suppressors, such as the P0602AAL61 model, are semiconductor devices designed to protect sensitive electrical components from voltage surges. A voltage surge occurs when a sudden increase in voltage, usually several times higher than normal, is encountered on an electrical circuit. This can cause catastrophic damage to delicate electronics, and if left to its own devices can lead to system failure. TVSs are designed to limit the extent of the surge in voltage, and are used to protect diodes, transistors, capacitors, logic circuits, and other electronics equipment.
The P0602AAL61 is an axial-leaded, low-capacitance TVS diode, providing highly reliable, fast-acting protection from destructive over-voltage transients. It is designed to protect against low voltage transient over-voltage conditions, as well as long line surge and AC mains transient immunity protection. This makes it ideal for consumer electronics, computer server, communications, industrial equipment and automotive applications, as it can provide protection against a range of different threats. The P0602AAL61 is also suitable for protecting against high frequency data lines (USB etc) and can also be used for high-precision analog and digital signal lines.
The principle of operation of a TVS is relatively simple—when a voltage transient is detected, the TVS instantly absorbs the excess voltage, blocking it and clamping it to a safe level. It is a three terminal device—input, output and ground (which is usually connected to the ground of the circuit being protected). The TVS works like a normal diode, but is specifically designed to withstand the high power associated with voltage transients. The P0602AAL61, in particular, has low capacitance and reverse leakage, enabling it to reduce the effect of the voltage transient in a short time. Its high surge ratings make it suitable for applications requiring additional protection from higher level voltage transients.
