Thyristors, also called silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs), are a type of power semiconductor device that has two stable states and an unstable state. It has three terminals, an anode, a cathode, and a control terminal, also known as the gate. The device is characterized by the voltage-controlled switch latching action, which is triggered by a gate current. When the gate current exceeds a certain level, the internal circuit of the Thyristor will close the switch between the anode and cathode. This is due to the increase in the gap between the turning on threshold voltage and blocking voltage of the device, which results in a decrease in leakage in the triggered state. Once triggered, the Thyristor will block any flow of current in both anode and cathode directions. This feature of the device gives it its advantages for current regulation and motor control applications.The Thyristor itself can be used as a switch, or in combination with other components to achieve a more complex operation. For example, a triac, which combines two Thyristors in reverse direction, can be used as an AC switch. If connected to a suitable control voltage, it can be used as a power regulator. Similarly, a Thyristor can also be used to build a phase control module, which can be used for commercial and industrial electrical power regulation applications.
