TVS - Thyristors

A transient voltage suppressor (TVS) is a device used to protect a semiconductor device from incoming voltage spikes. It can be either a diode or a thyristor. TVS thyristors are used when the voltage spike has a duration longer than microseconds and when the peak voltage is greater than 1kV. This type of usually requires an applied gate voltage in order to trigger the switch, and is better suited to higher voltage, longer duration, and low repetitive rates.

P2202ACL is a TVS thyristor manufactured by NXP Semiconductors. It is designed for the ESD protection of high-bandwidth data communication lines and is presented in a miniature Low Profile package. The device works as a steering diode, clamping circuit and a unidirectional voltage suppressor.

Application Field and Working Principle

P2202ACL is widely used in high-bandwidth product designs such as mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras, camcorders, digital video cameras, and high-speed networks. It provides robust overvoltage protection for data, signal, and power lines. The device is designed to guard against extreme ESD transients within the range of 1500V which ensures fast response during surges. The P2202ACL is ideal for applications that are susceptible to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrical overstress (EOS) conditions.

The P2202ACL works as a steering diode, clamping circuit, and a unidirectional voltage suppressor. The device offers unidirectional ESD protection for data lines in AC power and DC power modes, which are recognised by the international standards IEC61000-4-2 (ESD) and IEC61000-4-4 (EFT). During a surge, the steering diode will become conducting and limit the ESD event by clamping it to a specific voltage. The triggering voltage for the steering diode is adjustable and is dependent on the user\'s appliance.

The device will start to limit an ESD event as soon as the voltage reaches the clamping threshold voltage. It will absorb the ESD energy, reducing the voltage until it reaches the ESD clamping obstructed level. After the voltage falls below its threshold value, the device will become inactive again. This way, the return path is protected from the transient ESD event, thus allowing the signal waveform to recover from the event without the risk of data corruption.

The NXP P2202ACL TVS thyristor is designed for high-density architectures with surface-mount technology. The device is made with advanced trench technology, low parasitic inductance, and low capacitance. This helps to reduce the rising time of data lines to less than 5ns, ensuring fast signal recovery and low pulse-width distortion of the signal. It safely passes ESD tests up to 15kV, making it one of the most robust solutions for ESD protection.
