Thyristors (aka silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs)) are a class of solid-state electronics devices with three terminals; control, gate and anode/cathode. These semi-conductor devices were invented in 1957 by Bell Labs. They are used to switch and control power at high circuit voltages and currents and are often compared in application to mechanical relays as they can perform the same duties with greater speed and accuracy. The P2202CB is a discrete, single-phase silicon-controlled rectifier commonly used in applications such as welding machine control circuits and motor protection circuits where an increased overload current is needed.
The P2202CB comprises of four independent thyristors, two of which are FREDs (fast recovery diodes which act as antiparallel diodes for the thyristors) and two thyristor devices with anode A, anode K and gate cathode connections. The structure of the P2202CB is designed for back-to-back directional blocks of 2 thyristors connected in parallel and connected in series with two antiparallel diodes to improve the commutation capability and reliability of the thyristor. This allows for greater accuracy of control and operation.
The main application field for the P2202CB is for medium and high-voltage switching and control applications. The P2202CB is designed with maximum blocking voltage of 1200 V and its peak off-state blocking of 1700 V, making it ideal for switching power in medium and high-voltage circuits. Additionally, the P2202CB is suitable for applications where single-phase current is intense and excessive, thanks to its double parallel antiparallel structure.
The P2202CB also has a wide operating temperature range of -40C to 125C, making it suitable for applications in extreme weather and temperature conditions. This also makes it suitable for use in outdoor and industrial enclosures in which the ambient temperature varies. This helps prevents the overheating of other components that could potentially result from more than one standard thyristor placed in a given application.
In terms of the working principle, the P2202CB relies on the principle of the thyristor. The thyristor gates are triggered when the gate voltage exceeds the trigger (VGT) level, which occurs at a control current of only a few milliamps, making the P2202CB highly accurate. Upon arrival of the gate current, the thyristor begins to conduct and energizes the load. When the anode current is interrupted, the thyristor stops conduction and the load is again de-energized. Thanks to the fully balanced gate design, the P2202CB can be triggered with a continuous frequency of up to 100 kHz.
The P2202CB is commonly used in applications such as welding machine control circuits, motor protection circuits, AC/DC drives, power supplies, and other medium and high voltage switching control applications. It offers superior performance in comparison to standard thyristors due to its anode/cathode/gate structure and benefits from the two FREDs connected in parallel providing faster switching operation.
