P4802SALRP Application Field and Working Principle

Thyristor, also known as SCRs (silicon control rectifiers), are three-terminal semiconductor devices used for switching of signals or power. This type of switching can be used in consumer as well as industrial applications, including power control, over-voltage protection, battery charging, motor controls, switching of large loads or long lines, and switching of high-power inductive loads. The P4802SALRP is a 400-volt, 12-amp, dual-quadrant thyristor module. It has a maximum blocking voltage (Vgb) of 800 volts and a maximum forward voltage (Vf) of 400 volts. The device is rated for a load of 12 amps, and has a switching frequency of up to 20 kHz. It is employed in power controls, as well as in switching of high-power inductive loads. Furthermore, the device can be safely operated under normal ambient temperatures of up to 75°C, and has a maximum die temperature of 150°C.

The P4802SALRP’s switching time is determined by its prebias technology, which sets a high resistance between the Thyristor’s gate and main terminals. To switch the Thyristor on, a positive current is applied to the gate of the device. The current is compared to that of the forward voltage and, if it is greater than the forward voltage, the Thyristor will switch on. As the Thyristor switches on, it allows the current to flow in the correct direction. Once the signal is turned off, the current flows in the opposite direction and the Thyristor switches off.

The P4802SALRP can be used in high-power applications, such as electric heaters, ovens, dishwashers, motors, and small-scale energy conversion systems. It can also be employed in medical equipment, elevator systems, LED lighting, HVAC systems, and other facility-oriented industries. It is employed in single-phase and 3-phase applications, and is suitable for use in general-purpose AC and DC applications.
