TVS - Diodes are a type of circuit protection components designed to provide both space and circuit protection in power line and data line applications. P4SMA250A is a diode based transient voltage suppressor designed and manufactured by Diodes Inc., a leading semiconductor and module supplier of both active and passive components.
The P4SMA250A is a 250W Unidirectional Diode designed to protect interface circuits against transients caused by lightning and other electrical disturbances. It is designed to dissipate energy up to 8Watts with a low impedance path for instantaneously limiting overvoltages.
The P4SMA250A features low standoff voltage and peak pulse power capability, and very excellent clamping performance. It utilizes extremely low coupled capacitance and turn-on time for fast response. It is available in a DO-11 package and is also offered in an RoHS-compliant version.
The P4SMA250A has a wide range of applications. It is used for protecting interface circuits against transients such as electrostatic discharge and lightning events. It is suitable for use in applications such as personal computers, peripherals, data line interfaces and disk drives.
The working principle of P4SMA250A is based on the PN junction displaying the avalanche effect. When subjected to high voltage, it produces a low impedance path to limit the peak voltage to safe levels. It uses an avalanche voltage of 33V for unidirectional applications. When the device experiences a large surge pulse, the junction may move into an unstable state and generate an abnormally high current which is then transferred to the diode\'s power dissipation.
The P4SMA250A is designed to clamp the transient voltage to a safe level and dissipate large amounts of energy. It has a peak pulse power dissipation of 250W at a pulse duration of 10/1000s, which is two magnitudes higher than its breakdown voltage. Higher values for pulse duration will cause the device to reach the steady-state without breakdown.
The P4SMA250A offers excellent protection for interface circuits in a variety of applications. It features very low coupling capacitance and fast transition times, which make it suitable for protecting against electrostatic discharge, lightning events, and other transient events. Its high pulse power dissipation capability and excellent clamping performance make it ideal for personal computers, peripherals, data line interfaces, and disk drives.
