Phase Equalizing Peak Power Protecting (P4SMA400) is a type of transient voltage suppressors (TVS) diode, which is designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage transients induced by electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), and lightning. TVS diodes are used to protect electronic circuits from excessive voltage caused by surges in power supply lines, static electricity, or lightning. P4SMA400 belongs to the SMA surface mount series which are fast-responding 5-leaded devices with an improved peak power capability.

P4SMA400 diodes provide protection against over-voltage transients and can also be used as an ESD protection device in high-speed digital applications. The diode has excellent thermal and moisture stability. With an operating temperature from -55°C to 150°C, and a maximum peak pulse power of 400W, the SMA400 provides superior performance over other packages with the same peak power dissipation. The diode also has a low parasitic inductance that helps reduce power dissipation in high frequency applications. The SMA400 TVS diode is also offered in multiple packaging styles that allow for easy integration into a variety of electronic systems and applications.

The P4SMA400 diode has a typical stand-off voltage of 28V, and a low breakdown voltage of 26V. It has a fast response time of 500 femtoseconds (fs) and a peak power rating of 400W. The device also comes with a variety of corrosion-resistant terminals for easy mounting and installation. The diode has a high frequency, reverse leakage current of 5mA, and a minimum breakdown voltage of 10V.

The governing principle underlying P4SMA400 operation is that of a “diode bridge”. This bridge works by diverting the current that passes through it, in case of an over-voltage transient. The signal current, if any, is safely diverted through the reverse-biased diode bridge. The peak power rating of the diode is attained thanks to the “valley switching” action, which is enabled by the complementary nature of the two diode polarity matches. The main purpose of the valley switching is the shaping of the transient waveform that follows the over-voltage transient, in order to dissipate the excess power safely.

P4SMA400 is ideal for use in various consumer electronic products, automotive applications, telecom equipment, and other devices that require ESD protection. The device is also suitable for applications requiring a low capacitance, fast responding TVS diode such as high-speed digital communications, data lines, and power MOSFETs. The device is designed to provide superior performance and reliability, and is RoHS compliant.
