TVS - Diodes (Transient Voltage Suppressor - Diodes) are a type of electrostatic discharge diode that offer semiconductor protection from voltage transients such as line surges, electrical over-shoots, and electrical strike. TVS are suitable for high-speed switching applications such as power cables, communication lines, and equipment ports. The P6KE130-B is one of the most popular and versatile TVS-diodes available in the market.

P6KE130-B Application Field and Working Principle

The P6KE130-B is a small-signal device optimized for electrical over-voltage protection and line-to-ground electrical strikes in low-voltage, high-speed applications. It is designed to provide high response speed and excellent weatherproofing with a burn-out voltage of 130V and a Peak Pulse Power of 5.5 kA. The P6KE130-B is supersedes the existing 6.8V P6KE series, providing enhanced capability and performance, while reducing the cost of ownership for users. The P6KE130-B features an integrated ESD protection circuit with an optimal clamping voltage which offers additional transient protection and reduces over-voltage to levels that won’t damage the connected electronic equipment. The optimized response time of the device allows it to protect against transients up to 3kV, while allowing high-speed signalling. The device is designed to be highly compatible with the popular high-speed communication protocols, such as Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, HDMI, and DisplayPort.The device operates by clamping the transient voltages to a predetermined level, thereby providing high-speed protection from ESD strikes and temporary over-voltage conditions. The device operates by connecting a power supply of up to 130V and establishing a current path between the source and the output of the device with a low impedance load. The P6KE130-B comprises an anode, a cathode, and two zener diodes in series. In normal operation, the zener diodes conduct a very small amount of current, allowing the device to maintain its low-impedance characteristic. However, when a transient voltage occurs, the current through the diodes increases, thereby clamping the transient voltage to a predetermined level. The device also features three pinouts for ease of installation, flexibility, and more efficient utilisation of PCB real estate. The device’s 3 different pinouts are space saving, and allow the device to integrate nicely into any application. The three pinouts feature a single source-drain pins (maximum voltage 130V), two source pins (maximum voltage 265V) and two drain pins (maximum voltage 265V), making the device very versatile for different applications.
