The diode is useful in applications such as power line protection.The P6KE500A-HF is a thyristor device designed to protect equipment from voltage spikes and other overvoltage conditions. It can absorb as much as 500 watts of power at 8/20µS waveforms. Its clamping voltage or standoff voltage is 52 volts. The device also has very low reverse leakage current and a low capacitance value of 8pf.The working principle of the P6KE500A-HF is fairly simple. When the device is exposed to an overvoltage condition, it acts as a two terminal switch. It turns on by triggering the avalanche breakdown of the diode, which then begins conducting electricity between the two terminals.
