Optoisolator devices, such as a PC3SD21YTZC, serve to electrically isolate input and output signals while providing a coupling capability between these two signals. This type of optoisolator is particularly designed to isolate AC lines with a TRIAC or Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) output type. This optoisolator unit can provide complete protection between both lines, therefore allowing a safer, more reliable operation.

This particular optoisolator unit utilizes a field isolated TRIAC or SCR output that includes a triggering LED optically connected to a 5A TRIAC or SCR output. It also has a maximum repetitive peak on-state current of 0.8A. It has very good insulation characteristics, with an insulation resistance greater than or equal to 20MΩ at 500 VDC, as well as a dielectric strength of 1500 VRMS.

This optoisolator is constructed with a molded plastic epoxy underbody to protect the device from moisture, voltage surges, and certain chemicals. It can also operate in a wide temperature range, from 0 to +70°C, making it suitable for a variety of applications. Its high isolation voltage is also suitable for operation with mains application.

This optoisolator also uses a Phototriac coupled module for the TRIAC output, which improves the noise immunity while increases surge current handling capability. The same applies for the SCR output.

The switching voltage of the PC3SD21YTZC optoisolator is 12-280 Volts AC for the TRIAC output and 2-280 Volts AC for the SCR output. Other properties of the module include a short circuit blocking capability of 100 mA for 1/2 Cycle and a Rise/fall time of 10 μs. The optoisolator is also optimized to help reduce any external circuit noise, which helps ensure reliable operation.

The working principle of the PC3SD21YTZC optoisolator is relatively simple and can be explained by the circuit diagram below. The optoisolator consists of a light source, such as a light emitting diode (LED), and a light detector, such as a Triac or SCR.
