PC815I optoisolators are galvanically isolated optocouplers with transistor, photovoltaic output. An optocoupler is an electronic device that links two electrical circuits together, with one operating, usually on a higher voltage, and the other operating at a lower voltage. PC815I optocouplers do this by using a light-emitting diode and a phototransistor. As the PC815I optocoupler is a transistor output type, the phototransistor is used to switch the electrical current across two circuits on and off. This is very useful when a high voltage needs to be controlled by a low voltage or isolating two circuits when only a single control point is required.
A PC815I optocoupler provides very high-level electrical isolation from one circuit to another, both holding off high voltages and preventing interference between them. Since the coupling can be achieved without a physical connection, it reduces the chances of arc and lightning damage. The PC815I optocoupler also provides high-speed current transfer and low electrical losses, making it ideal for high-volume data transfer applications.
When using PC815I optoisolators, the light-emitting diode serves as a signal transmitter. When a voltage is applied to the LED an electrical current flows, producing light, which in turn activates the phototransistor. The light emitted from the LED is focused across the isolation gap, which is usually an air gap, and back across the gap to the phototransistor. When this occurs, the phototransistor turns on, allowing current to flow from one circuit to the other. When the voltage is removed, the current stops and the phototransistor is no longer in conductance. The current passing through the LED is also controlled by the current limiting resistor placed in series with the LED.
PC815I optoisolators are used in a variety of industries, such as automotive, renewable energy and communications.
