PC823 Working Principle

The PC823 is a general-purpose optoisolator with a single channel. It contains a transistor, photovoltaic output, consists of an NPN silicon phototransistor optically coupled to a gallium arsenide infrared LED, along with a built-in resistor and other passive components that enhance its functioning. The LED emits infrared light when a forward voltage is applied to its anode. This light is directed at the phototransistor which is configured to be in an OFF mode. The light is absorbed by the phototransistor, which then turns ON and activates the circuit.

The optoisolator works by using the LED to transmit light that is absorbed by the phototransistor, which then conducts current to activate a circuit. When the input signal is removed, the LED no longer emits light and the phototransistor cannot detect the pulses and shuts down the output circuit.
