The PCA9534ADW is an I/O expander manufactured by NXP which provides a diversity of electrical interfaces, allowing the connection of several digital components. This allows for a variety of interfaces that are not present on a single device. This Io Expander can be used in a variety of applications such as industrial automation, automotive, home automation systems, medical, test and measurement and telecommunications.
The PCA9534ADW is a 8-bit expander with an input/output port of up to 28 pins. It operates at a voltage of 1.65V – 5.5V, performing in both SOT23-6 and TSSOP8 packages. It features multiple inputs, providing control redundancy, while maintain control over pull-up resistors, slew rate, I/O drive strength, and power supply voltage. Furthermore, it is equipped with an LED driver to provide LED indicators for different digital states.
The PCA9534ADW supports multiple communication protocols, namely I2C, SMBUS, and SPI. It can be easily interconnected with microcontroller with an SPI interface for easy communication. Moreover, it is equipped with up to 4 addresses which can be used for multiple expansions. The PCA9534ADW also has by-pass key functionality for particular configurations and supports up to 400 kHz I2C wave frequency.
The PCA9534ADW contains an on-chip control logic and supports upto 3.6 mA current per output. It is also equipped with a power-on reset blip that is enabled by default. This feature assists in recovering the device after a power fail, without the need to manually reset the device. It is also designed with a high level of integration, to reduce the overall cost. This device utilizes CMOS technology for low power consumption and low electromagnetic interference.
With these features, the PCA9534ADW can be used in many applications, including security systems, industrial networks, medical diagnostics, communication networks and data acquisition systems. Several kinds of devices and modules can be interconnected with each other using this Io Expander. It is also great in controlling actuators or sensors, e.g. a relay direct control, lamp illumination, etc.
The PCA9534ADW is designed with a common working principle which is based on the technique of current measurement per pin. Using this principle, digital devices such as LEDs, switches, and sensors can be included. Each device is connected to a pin of the PCA9534ADW and each will measure the current passing through the same pin. Based on the current readings, output states can be determined, hence the position of individual components can be determined.
