PCA9544APW is an I²C-bus and SMBus multiplexer with a reset input. It is designed to select one of two I²C-bus address groups, each containing up to eight addresses. This device allows up to eight I²C-bus masters to share an I²C-bus, with the full I²C-bus operation resolution of up to 8MHz. At power-on, the state of the reset input determines which of the two I²C-bus address groups will be selected.

PCA9544APW offers a wide range of applications for field-programmable gate arrays, microprocessors, and other embedded systems applications. It is especially suitable for multi-master systems where several I²C-bus masters need access to the I²C-bus at the same time. In addition, the PCA9544APW can be used as an I²C-bus bridge between two I²C-bus segments, such as a single I²C-bus with one group of I²C-bus masters and one group of I²C-bus slaves.

Working Principle of PCA9544APW:

The PCA9544APW operates by selecting one of two I²C-bus address groups when the reset signal is asserted. The selected address group is determined by the polarity of the reset signal. When the reset signal is active low, the first address group is selected, and when the reset signal is active high, the second address group is selected. The I²C-bus address that is selected for the first group is always the same as the address for the second group. The reset signal is active low when the PCA9544APW is powered up.

The PCA9544APW supports up to eight I²C-bus masters, each with up to eight I²C-bus slaves. The PCA9544APW multiplexes the I²C-bus signals of the masters to the slaves, allowing all eight masters to communicate with each other. The PCA9544APW can also be used as a bridge between two I²C-bus segments, allowing one I²C-bus segment to communicate with the other I²C-bus segment.

The PCA9544APW is powered either by a 3-volt or 5-volt supply. The I²C-bus can also be powered directly from the device. In order to reduce power consumption, the PCA9544APW has a power down mode, in which the multiplexer is disabled and the I²C-bus is pulled high. The device also has a low standby current, reducing power consumption further.
