The PCA9548A is an octal bidirectional, low-voltage CMOS I2C switch designed to increase the size of the bus. It integrates eight bidirectional translating switches that provide bidirectional buffering of the I2C-bus signals and support the multi-master environment.The device is capable of translating the interface between low-voltage I2C systems to the high-voltage I2C standard and vice versa. In addition, it can also translate the interface between I2C and SMBus.

Application Field

The PCA9548A is mainly used in systems with limited number of devices or channels but a large number of devices or I2C busses required. For example, in automation systems and industrial control systems, the PCA9548A can help expand devices from a main interface up to eight peripheral I2C busses. It can also provide communications between various devices and is suitable for low-voltage systems.

Other applications include sensing and measurement systems, as well as displays and LCD modules. With a wide voltage range from 1.8 V to 5.5 V, the PCA9548A allows operation of various devices with different power supplies that require different voltage ranges.

Working Principle

The PCA9548A provides a two-way flow of data over an I2C bus. It has control logic and drivers that feature an 8:1 switching multiplexer, allowing data to be routed in either direction. The bidirectional data switches can be controlled via the I2C bus. The device has an internal driver to support up to 8x I2C busses, and the number of busses can be changed with the simple programming software. The PCA9548A employs the I2C open-drain interface and supports bidirectional data flow. It also provides support for low-voltage interface communication.

To ensure reliable data transmission, the PCA9548A contains a 4-wire I2C bus interface that is able to perform switch address assignment, and 7-bit register address selection. The 7-bit addressing level allows the device to support 128 devices on a single bus, thus enabling high-density communications. The device has four operating modes: repeating wake-up, wake-up, operating, and shutdown mode. The device can be programmed to enter into any one of these modes.

The PCA9548A also offers protection against overvoltages and transient protection, along with compliance to the I2C bus and SMBus protocol. It supports hot swapping of I2C slave devices, and hot plugging. In addition, the device has a built-in power on reset circuit that ensures proper powering up of the device.
