The PCA9574PW is an 8-bit I/O expander that provides a simple but effective method of adding more logic outputs, as well as additional input pins to your microcontroller-based designs. It can be used as a standalone device or interfaced with other Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) controllers. PCA9574PW is a low power, low cost, and highly flexible solution for expanding your project\'s I/O. PCA9574PW gives eight additional logic inputs and eight additional logic outputs, which can easily be expanded to sixteen with just two devices, greatly increasing the design’s input and output capability. All eight of the logic outputs can be configured as high-polarity (active high) or low-polarity (active low) for full compatibility with any microcontroller. The PCA9574PW operates with minimal power consumption and does not have to have power and ground pins to function, as these two inputs can come directly from the host microcontroller.
The PCA9574PW is connected to a system controller using Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) communication, and uses either an 8-bit address or a 7-bit address along with an additional "write protect" bit. Once connected, a user can communicate directly with the PCA9574PW using I2C commands such as read, write and input/output ports to set pins. The circuit can be programmed to operate in power-on default (PoD) states, allowing the circuit to remain in a default state until a command is received from the host controller.
