AC DC converters are devices which convert alternating current (AC) into a direct current (DC). The PFE500SA28/T converter is a type of AC DC converter manufactured by Power Integrations. It is designed for a variety of applications including power supplies, switched-mode power supplies (SMPS), server power supplies, motor drives, lighting, and other power conversion applications.
The PFE500SA28/T converter is capable of both constant voltage (CV) and constant current (CC) operation, and has an adjustable output voltage range of 0-28V. The working principle of the PFE500SA28/T converter is based on the operation of an AC switch, or “half-bridge”, which can be thought of as two switches in series, each able to alternately connect either the positive or the negative terminal of the AC source to the load. During operation, the AC switch is pulsed ON and OFF periodically, with the duty-cycle of the pulses carefully controlled. This switching induces an intermediate DC voltage at the output of the converter, which is then regulated to the required output voltage and current level.
When the AC switch is pulsed ON, the voltage is transferred from the AC source to the load, producing the desired current. When the switch is pulsed OFF, the voltage is transferred back to the source along the other switch, while the energy stored in the inductor keeps the current flowing. This process can be better represented with a switching waveform, as shown in figure 1.
As the pulse width and frequency are varied, the output voltage can be regulated throughout its range. This regulation helps to ensure that the device behaves predictably and reliably, while maintaining a high-efficiency level. It also helps to reduce unwanted noise and electromagnetic interference.
In addition to the AC DC converter, the PFE500SA28/T also includes a number of protection features. These include an active current limit, an over-temperature protection circuit, a pulse skipping feature for improved light load efficiency, and a fast soft-start circuit to reduce inrush current.
The PFE500SA28/T converter can be used in a wide variety of power conversion applications, and is well suited for applications where high efficiency, low cost, and reliable operation are required. Its features make it ideal for use in power supplies, switched-mode power supplies, server power supplies, motor drives, lighting, and other power conversion applications.
