5. External clock mode

Oscillator Start-up Timer (OST) If the oscillator module is configured in LP, XT or HS mode, the Oscillator Start-up Timer (OST) starts counting 1024 oscillations from OSC1. This occurs on power-on reset (POR) and power-on timer (PWRT) expiration (if configured) or wake-up from sleep. During this time, the program counter is not incremented and program execution is suspended. The OST ensures that the oscillator circuit using a quartz crystal resonator or ceramic resonator is powered up and provides a stable system clock to the oscillator block. When switching between clock sources, the new clock needs a delay to stabilize.

6. Two-Speed Clock Startup Mode

Two-speed start-up mode provides additional power saving oscillator start-up and code execution by minimizing the delay between external. Two-speed start-up eliminates wake-up time for external oscillator start-up and can reduce the overall power consumption of the device when sleep mode is heavily used in applications. This mode allows the application to enter from Sleep, execute some instructions using INTOSC as the clock source, and then return to Sleep to wait for the primary oscillator to stabilize. The Oscillator Start-up Timer (OST) is enabled when the oscillator block is configured in LP, XT or HS mode. The OST will suspend program execution until 1024 oscillations have been counted. Two-Speed Start-up mode minimizes code execution delays caused by internal oscillator operation while counting the OST. When the OST count reaches 1024 and the OSTS bit of the OSCCON register is set, program execution switches to the external oscillator.
