Fixed InductorsFixed inductors, also known as coils, chokes, or reactors, are electrical and electronic components with the function of transmitting an electric current from one wire to another. The transmission of the electrical current is achieved through a magnetic field created by the passage of electrons through the inductor. Commonly used for circuit protection, signal modulation, and power supply regulation, fixed inductors are often characterized by their induction value, workspace size, input voltage, peak current, and temperature range. The PL8906 is one such widely used fixed inductor.
The PL8906 is a compact, low-profile, high-efficiency Fixed Inductor for use in power circuits requiring high current and low parasitic elements. It features a high-reliability level of insulation, better than competitive products. The device is suited for applications in power supplies, electrical and telecommunication products, automotive applications, embedded systems (especially those requiring high temperatures), industrial systems, and more.
The core of the PL8906 consists of a ferrite-like material, allowing light-weighted construction. The device has very low insertion losses (across a range of 1MHz-10MHz) while maintaining a minimum inductance (e.g., 2.2μH). The device is very tolerant and able to resist exceptional temperature ranges, withstanding up to 120℃. Its output is very universal: the DC resistance values are between 0.63 and 10 ohms, and it is rated up to 15 amps of continuous emission.
The PL8906’s working principle is based on inductance, a property of an electric circuit by which a voltage is induced in a conductor when a current flowing through it changes. Voltage is generated through Faraday’s law of induction, which states that the voltage generated in a conductor is proportional to the rate of change of the enclosed magnetic flux. The magnetic flux induces an electric field which then generates a voltage.
The PL8906 has a high permeability, meaning it is able to contain a greater amount of magnetic flux than a simple iron material would. This allows the PL8906 to create a much stronger electromotive force (EMF) and store more energy within the inductor. The EMF is what creates the voltage, as discussed above, allowing for current flow through the device. Further, the permeability helps to prevent losses due to leakage and shield the inductor from external interference.
When the PL8906 is subjected to changing electric currents, it exhibits an even more beneficial characteristic for power supply applications: self-regulating voltage. This means that the energy stored in the inductor creates an effective damper against voltage fluctuations. Above, we discussed EMF, and it plays a key role in self-regulation. The EMF causes an opposing voltage to be generated, which opposes changes in current. The EMF therefore prevents rapid changes in the current, resulting in a more regulated voltage.
To summarize, the PL8906 is a fixed inductor used for power supply regulation in electrical and telecommunication products, automotive applications, embedded systems, and more. Its soft magnetic core creates a higher-than-normal inductance, allowing for low insertion losses, high reliability, and stable output. Furthermore, the device exhibits self-regulating voltage, providing a further level of protection to the system.
With a low DC resistance, up to 15A of current and good temperature tolerance, the PL8906 is the perfect choice for many power supply applications. The device is reliable and cost-effective, making it widely adopted by engineers and technicians for use in their circuits and systems.
