Power Over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that enables power and communication data to be carried over a single Ethernet cable. PoE can be attributed to a number of applications, such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), Wi-Fi access points, security cameras, PDA charging points, computer printers, POS terminals, and more. One of the best representatives of a PoE implementation is the POE21U-1AF. This device enables one to supply power to a remote device over a single Cat5 cable up to a distance of 100 metres. The POE21U-1AF device enables I.T professionals to expand network connections to previously inaccessible or unreachable locations.

The POE21U-1AF is a specialized device that allows a power source to be connected to a remote location through a single unshielded twisted pair (UTP) Cat5 cable. It requires a separate power source to be connected to the device at the main point, and a special low voltage DC power adapter is included with the POE21U-1AF for this purpose. This device is capable of sending power to PDs (powered devices) at distances of up to 100 metres from the power source.

The technology behind POE21U-1AF is based on the 802.3af standard. This standard generally permits the PoE to transfer 15.4 watts (W) of power at a given time, though up to 25.5W can be supplied through an augmented version. The POE21U-1AF provides a total of 15.4W of power through its 4 ports, enabling each of the ports to supply up to 3.84W of power.

The basic principle behind POE technology works much like a normal wall socket in a house. A power source with a main power line is connected to the POE21U-1AF at the main point, and it transmits the power over the Cat5 cable to the PDs at the remote location. The POE21U-1AF works to convert the external power source into a low voltage DC power source that is sent over the Cat5 cable. This DC power is then converted to usable power when it reaches the PDs. This process works under the 802.3af standard where both the main power source/PoE device and the PDs are required to be compliant. This connection system makes it easier to install and manage complex networking systems with minimal effort.
