PON (Passive Optical Network) is an innovative technology from the optical access network. Generally, the traditional access network adopts the FTTH(Fiber to the Home) technology with active components(switching equipment) inside the customer premises. Compared with the FTTH network, PON has the advantage of low construction cost and low operational cost due to its low power consumption and easy maintenance.
PON25 (also referred to as2500Mb/s PON) is a new technology first jointly established by three international standards organizations: ITU-T, IEEE, and BBF. This technology has been widely accepted for its application field and working principle. In this article, we will discuss the application field and working principle of PON25.
PON25 Application Field
PON25 is widely used in the broadband access network. Its application field includes network video surveillance, fixed network, mobile network, enterprise Private Line, converged access network and wireless access network, etc. Generally, the PON25 access network adopts the SFP (small form factor pluggable) optical transceiver to connect the optical line terminal(OLT)and the optical network unit(ONU). The physical connection mode is Point-to-Multipoint(P2MP) which provides a high speed and low latency for triple play services and transmission. In addition,PON25 technology also has the advantage of excellent performance over the traditional access network.
PON25 Working Principle
The basic working principle of PON25 is to divide the bandwidth into multiple channels. For each optical fiber, there is one optical line terminal(OLT). The OLT is the core of the network and the optical network unit(ONU) are connected to the OLT in a Point to Multi-point manner. The ONU is connected to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) to provide access services for users. ONT\'s are typically installed in the customer premises.
The technique of PON25 mainly use TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access), which is better for providing broadcast services. During the process of broadcasting, the OLT divides the different data streams (video, voice, and data) into multiple time slots, with each user owning a certain number of slots according to their setting. This way, data transmission over different channels do not interfere each other. TDMA also allow for scalability, allowing for the channel to be dynamically adjusted depending on the user\'s need. Finally, the data will transmit from the OLT to the ONU via the PON25 network.
