The PT3106A is a Low Dropout (LDO) Adjustable regulator designed to provide superior accuracy in regulating the output voltage. It offers excellent reliability, optimal transient response and low noise performance in a wide input voltage range. The device is suitable for applications such as portable equipment, computer peripherals, battery operated systems, charging systems, audio/video systems and decorative lighting.
The PT3106A belongs to a family of DC-DC converters, which are devices that convert a DC voltage from one level to another. It is designed to take an input voltage in a range from 1.5V to 18V and convert it to a regulated output voltage between 0.3V and 17V. The output current is limited to 500mA, and the device operates at temperatures ranging between -40°C and +85°C.
The PT3106A features a PWM (Pulse Figure Modulation) control architecture which provides fast transient response, along with excellent stability and thermal characteristics. The device has an adjustable current limit to prevent output over-current conditions. Moreover, the device has a built-in Soft-Start circuit which reduces inrush current. This feature reduces the inrush current for a stable output voltage.
The PT3106A circuit is comprised of a precision voltage reference, PWM controller, an error amplifier, an internal power MOSFET and passive components. The reference maintains voltage regulation accuracy across varying temperatures and loads. The PWM controller and error amplifier provide feedback loop control which produces a stable output voltage and maintains it across a wide range of input and load conditions.
The internal power MOSFET is used to to convert the input voltage to the regulated output voltage. This MOSFET is protected from both thermal and over-current events, by a set of precise internal circuits. The passive components of the circuit limit the current during startup and over-temperature conditions.
The PT3106A is able to regulate the output voltage with excellent accuracy and low noise. The device also provides low-ripple and EMI noise performance, as well as spike free startup. It is protected from over-voltage, over-current and thermal overload conditions, making it a reliable and robust power converter. The device features a shutdown mode which significantly decreases the power consumption while the device is not in use. All these features make the PT3106A an ideal DC-DC converter for applications such as computers, portable equipment and charging systems.
