Working Principle

The PT4472N DC-DC Buck converter is based on the principle of current-mode control. It works by using three different current signals: a reference current, a modulation signal, and a feedback signal. The reference current is generated by an internal oscillator, the modulation signal is provided by an external resistor, and the feedback signal is generated from the output voltage as measured on the FB pin.

The reference current is compared with the modulation signal and the feedback signal. The difference between the reference current and the modulation signal is amplified, and controls a PWM switch that operates the main power-switching element in the converter. This is how it is able to regulate the output voltage and maintain a constant output current.

The PT4472N features short-circuit protection, thermal shutdown protection, under-voltage lock-out protection, and an accurate enable control with zero current draw when the supply voltage is below the enable threshold. It also supports a dimming feature with the option to reduce the output voltage by up to 10%. All these features make the PT4472N a great choice for meeting the application requirements in automotive, consumer, and portable electronics.
