DC DC Converters

PT4481C is a DC to DC converter with galvanically isolated, buck-boost characteristics and high efficiency. This device is designed primarily for use in DC to DC converters as a replacement for discreet components like transformers and linear regulators. Depending upon the parameters set by the external components, the PT4481C can supply output current in either buck or boost mode. Its operating temperature range is from 0 to 70°C.

PT4481C Application Fields

The PT4481C is highly suitable for low voltage regulated power supply applications like process and instrumentation, automotive control systems, control loops, battery operated equipment, telecom power systems and other mobile applications due to its high efficiency and compact size. Due to its buck-boost characteristics, this device is suitable for a wide range of input voltage from 3.5V to 18V and can provide an output voltage range of 0.8V to 18V using external components. This device provides higher system performance and improved operational stability to meet the requirements of high-precision applications.

PT4481C Working Principle

The PT4481C consists of two internal power switches, a voltage reference, an error amplifier, an internal frequency oscillator, and all necessary control circuits. A fully integrated feedback loop, triggered by the voltage reference, regulates the output voltage. When the input voltage is lower than the output voltage, the buck operating mode is entered by controlling the buck-boost switch according to the reference voltage. The input current is rectified through the inductor and the buck-boost switch (during the on-time interval period). During the off-time interval, the energy stored in the inductor charges the output capacitor.

When the input voltage is higher than the output voltage, the boost operating mode is entered by controlling the external components according to the reference voltage. The input current though the inductor should be set to the load current by controlling the buck-boost switch and the output capacitor. During the on-time interval, the energy stored in the inductor charges the output capacitor.

This device includes an over-voltage protection, an overtemperature protection, an over-current protection, and an output short-circuit protection to prevent damage due to external or internal faults. Additionally, this device also includes a reset function (which can be used for controlling the power supply switching cycles) to minimize the stress of the switching device.
