PT4668C, as a new generation of highly integrated DC/DC booth mode converters, can provide industry leading performance in clean power solutions, reducing noise and electromagnetic interference (EMI). Available in a compact, 36-pin SIP package, PT4668C can be used in a wide range of applications, from industrial, to consumer electronic, to automotive, and even medical use. It has a wide 4.5V-20V input voltage range and features adjustable outputs from 0.8V to ±12V. With an adjustable frequency of 500kHz to 1MHz and up to 94% efficiency, PT4668C can provide supply and buck voltage conversion in a single integrated device. It also has a wide range of protection features, including output overvoltage, cycle-by-cycle current limit, and short circuit protection. Working Principle

PT4668C works in the so-called boost-mode converter operating principle. In this type of converters, the output voltage is higher than the input voltage, and phase-shifted input voltage is used to provide energy storage during the conduction cycles. Before seeing how this type of converters works it is important to understand the key components it uses in its operation. The main ones are the inductor, diode and capacitor. The inductor is basically a wire coil used to store energy and it should have low resistance, low cost and high current carrying capacity. The diode, on the other hand, is used to prevent energy from being drained from the circuit and the capacitor is used to filter the output voltage.

The operation of a boost-mode converter is based on a switched mode technique. This technique allows the control of the current that is delivered to the output using a voltage-sense technique to regulate the output voltage. The basic operating principle consists of opposing the stored energy in the inductor with the output load current. The current that flows in opposite direction to the load current is created by a voltage-controlled switch or transistor that periodically connects and disconnects the inductor to the input voltage.

During the switch ON cycle, the gate of the transistor is set to a certain voltage. This voltage is kept constant regardless of the load or the input voltage. This causes the current in the inductor to rise exponentially until reaching the peak current set by the current-sense circuit. This peak current is equal to the load plus the gate drive current of the transistor. Once the peak current is reached, the switch is then turned OFF, and the inductor current begins to decrease, while the energy stored in the inductor is transferred to the output through the diode.
