Working Principle
The PT5105A operates as a step down converter, regulating the output voltage by regulating the on-time of an internal N-channel power switch. The on-time is governed by comparing the feedback input to the internal reference voltage. The internal switch is operated in a switching mode at a frequency determined by a ramp signal. The ramp signal is generated by an internal oscillator and is used to keep a constant on-time ratio between the high and the low pulse. By changing the resistance at the frequency setting pin, the frequency of oscillator can be varied to meet the desired output current.
When the input voltage is higher than the targeted output voltage, the switch is closed and the current is conducted from the input to the output. The switch is then opened to complete the switching cycle, and the pulses of the output current harmonically combined together, allowing the output voltage to be converted from one level to another. The on-time and duty cycle of the output current are adjusted until it reaches the targeted level of output voltage.
The PT5105A features a low ripple, adjustable output current limit and soft-start, adjustable slew rate, Under Voltage Lockout (UVLO), and Thermal Shutdown (TSD) protection.
