DC-to-DC converters are devices that convert a DC voltage input signal into a different, typically varied output DC voltage level. The voltage conversion ratio may range from 1:1 to dozens of times or more. They are widely used in electronic equipment, power converters, drives and so on. The application field and working principle of PT6706N is taken for example to introduce the DC DC converter.PT6706N is a high efficiency step-up DC-DC converter with an input voltage range of 2.7V-5.2V. It can efficiently convert 1.5-3V to 5V output. With the ultra-low power 80 µA standby current and high efficiency DC/DC conversion, PT6706N is ideal for battery powered applications.The principle of PT6706N is based on the flyback switching regulator. When the switch is on, current will be stored in the inductor and the output voltage increases. When the switch is off, the inductor will discharge all stored energy into output capacitor C3, and the output voltage is determined by the voltage of the output capacitor and the load. The advantage of using this topology is that no transformer is needed, and it can realize the DC-DC conversion of a wide input voltage range. At the same time, the dead time which is set to minimize the reverse current from the load and input is beneficial for improved efficiency.In the PT6706N control IC, it contains the output power stage, feedback control circuit, discharge feedback control circuit and power-on reset circuit. The output power stage is responsible for the conversion of DC power, and the feedback control circuit adjusts the duty cycle of the switch to ensure the output voltage stability. The discharge feedback control circuit controls the blocking of the switch output when the switch is turned off, and ensures that the current loop is completely discharged, so that reverse input current will not occur. The power-on reset circuit enables a reset pin for product startup.When the voltage source is connected to the output, the control circuit controls the switch, and the current flows through the inductor and the rectifying diode. The energy obtained by the power source is stored in the inductor and the output capacitor. The diode is used to ensure that the energy can only flow in one direction. When the current rises to the peak value, the IC control circuit cuts off the switch, making the current through the inductor decreasing and then turning off the output. The energy stored in the inductor is discharged into the output capacitor, and the output voltage is determined by the voltage of the output capacitor and the load. At this time, the diode limits reverse current, ensuring that all energy can be output, and the output voltage can be stabilized.In summary, PT6706N is a high-efficiency step-up DC-DC converter with a wide input voltage range. With its excellent power efficiency, low voltage output stability and low standby current, it is widely used in many electronic equipment, power converters, drives and so on.
